In a rural area of upstate New York, a man has been charged with murder after it was claimed that he fatally shot a young woman who was in a car that had inadvertently turned into his driveway.
Approximately 60 miles northeast of Albany, in the little village of Hebron, the tragedy happened on Saturday night just before 10 p.m. ET.
Four young adults drove their car up the wrong driveway while trying to find a friend’s house nearby. The homeowner, 65-year-old Kevin Monahan, rushed outside with a rifle and fired at their car as they were turning back after realizing their mistake, according to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy.
“It’s a very rural area, it’s dirt roads, there’s not a lot of cellular service or any type of internet,” Murphy said at a press conference on Monday. “Getting lost is simple.”
At least two shots were fired by Monahan, one of which struck Kaylin Gillis, 20, of Schuylerville, New York, who was a passenger in the car.

Due of weak cellular connection, the group was unable to call 911 until they reached the nearby town of Salem as they were driving away. When emergency personnel got on the scene, they tried to revive Gill, but Murphy says she was later declared dead.
The sheriff called Gill “an innocent, young girl” who hails from “a very good family,” and he said he knows them “personally.”
He told reporters, “This is a very sad case. It appears that the vehicle was leaving at the time, so Mr. Monahan had no reason to feel threatened.
Investigators think the automobile was only in Monahan’s driveway for a “very short time” prior to shots being fired, according to Murphy, who also noted that there was no known interaction between the group and Monahan. The sheriff refused to say what kind of weapon was used.
