Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will cost the United States dearly, President Joe Biden has warned.
The cost of gasoline is expected to rise. Threatening the post-International War II world order that has kept Europe mostly peaceful US forces won’t be sent to Ukraine to participate in this fight, Biden has made plain.
When Vice President Joe Biden announced penalties on Russia for starting its invasion on Tuesday, he was very careful to make it clear that the United States was not hostile toward Russia.
“Let me be clear: These are totally defensive moves on our part. We have no intention of fighting Russia,” Biden said. Biden previously told NBC News in February that he would not consider any situation in which the United States sent soldiers to Ukraine to remove American citizens.
“That is not the case. A global war is triggered when the United States and Russia begin firing at each other “he stated.
The fact that Vice President Biden made it clear that US troops would not be offensively involved may have helped to avoid a conflict between the United States and Russia, but critics pointed out that it had also made it clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin that his forces would face fewer obstacles during their invasion.
Former Pentagon Officer Ian Brzezinski told the New York Times earlier this month that “Biden undermined our most critical source of leverage in this situation.”
The United States has troops stationed in Ukraine’s border countries.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine was motivated in large part by his fear that Ukraine could join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, which was founded following World War II to control the Soviet Union.
NATO member countries Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania are all located inside Ukraine’s borders. The US would be obligated to defend one of these countries if they were threatened by Russia.
But “we want to send an unequivocal message that the United States and our Allies will defend every inch of NATO territory and adhere to the obligations that we made to NATO,” Vice President Biden said Tuesday.
At the White House, he said something similar just a few days earlier: “We also will not deploy troops into Ukraine to fight; nonetheless, we will continue our support for the Ukrainian people.”

Transshipment Of Troops Among The Nato Member States
Despite Biden’s assurance that the US would not send troops to Ukraine, the US has recently committed extra troops and fighter jets to eastern European countries such as Poland and Romania and has placed 8,500 US troops on high alert.
It has been reported by CNN that more U.S. personnel in Europe may be sent to countries further east because of Russia’s tremendous firepower so close to our friends.
At a press conference on Thursday, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced that the alliance’s defense stance had been activated. “Today we gave our military commanders more authority to move forces and to deploy forces when necessary, and of course, this can also be elements of the response force,” he said. “We are prepared, but our actions are defensive, measured, and we do not desire conflict. We’d want to stay out of it if we can.”

Opposition To A Large American Role
According to polls conducted prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many Americans are skeptical of the United States’ involvement in the crisis.
Just 26% of Americans polled in an AP-NORC survey say the United States should play a big role in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. It should play a minor or no role, according to 52% and 20% of respondents, respectively.
Republicans (22%) and Democrats (32%) both wanted the United States to play a significant role. For 32% of Independents, the United States should have no role, compared to only 22% of Republicans and 14% of Democrats.
According to the results of the poll, Vice President Biden and other American authorities must take great care to involve citizens in any changes to the administration’s stance on the deployment of US soldiers.
