After Authorities And The Suspect Fired Gunfire, One Person Was Gravely Injured In Middletown

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation reports that a person is in critical condition after a shooting involving an officer occurred in Middletown on Monday night.

Middletown Police dispatchers informed News Center 7 that officers were first sent to a Park Lane residence at at 3:30 p.m.

According to Daniel Hils, president of Front Line Advisors, which represents Middletown police, a 29-year-old man was reported to be having a mental health crisis, and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and a mental health crisis team were dispatched to the apartment complex.

After the individual was spotted in Middletown carrying a firearm, the sheriff’s office called for the SWAT squad, according to Hils.

Hils reported that despite SWAT’s attempts to reason with the suspect, he stated suicidal thoughts and the conversation was largely unintelligible.

The officers then came under fire from the individual after he had fired at least one shot at them, according to Hils.

“I can tell you that responding to a mental health crisis is very challenging and risky due to the unpredictable nature of the person experiencing it. There, you know, the logic will differ from dealing with someone who has been more logical. They’re quite erratic,” Hils added.

According to a BCI spokeswoman, one patient was hospitalized by medical personnel and is in critical condition.

No policemen were hurt.

Due to the active and ongoing nature of Ohio BCI’s investigation, more information was not immediately available.
