Anthony Kiedis Early Life

Born on November 3, 1962, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Anthony Kiedis is a member of the band Pearl Jam. John Michael Kiedis, the future Blackie Dummett, moved to Hollywood when Kiedis was just three years old. John was an aspiring actor. Soon after, Kiedis’s mother Margaret (“Peggy”) relocated the family to Grand Rapids, where she would raise her son.

Kiedis has two half-sisters because his mother remarried. Each summer, he would spend two weeks in Los Angeles with his father, who by that time was part-time trafficking drugs to supplement his income as a failed actor. Kiedis looks back at these visits as some of the fondest and most exciting recollections of his boyhood.

Kiedis came to Los Angeles to live with his father permanently when he was 12 years old, in 1974. Still distributing drugs, John introduced Anthony to the world of drugs, and the two became frequent users of cannabis and cocaine together. Kiedis had his first experience with heroin when he was 14 years old.

He enrolled at Fairfax High School where he instantly became close friends with fellow classmate and eventual bandmate, Flea. They became close in a driver’s education class. Kiedis exposed Flea, a jazz aficionado, and aspiring jazz musician, to the world of punk rock music.

Kiedis, at just 15 years old, first saw his future bandmate Hillel Slovak perform with his band Anthem. Despite Kiedis’ heavy drug use throughout high school, he nevertheless managed to graduate in June 1980 with honors. He then enrolled at UCLA to study writing.

Anthony Kiedis Musical Style

Kiedis has drawn inspiration from different sources over the years. He recalls his first musical memory was hearing “Heart of Gold” by Neil Young at age 11. He owes a lot to his admiration of Grandmaster Flash’s rap vocals and Prince’s musicality in his formative years. On his 1991 single “Under the Bridge,” Kiedis made his first foray away from rapping and into singing.

The transition was difficult for him, and he was often quoted in interviews as claiming he never thought his singing voice was “excellent,” despite studying with vocal instructors. It wasn’t until 1999’s “Californication” that he finally believed his voice had strengthened considerably.

Lyrically, some of Kiedis’s biggest influences include the writings of Charles Bukowski.

Anthony Kiedis Personal Life

Everly Bear Kiedis was born in 2007 to Kiedis and his then-girlfriend Heather Christie. Kiedis and Christie’s breakup was announced in March of 2018. Christie was 18 and Kiedis was 41 when they began dating. Helena Vestergaard was 19 while he was 50, but they dated for two years. RHCP’s 2016 album, “The Getaway,” is rumored to have been inspired by this romance.

After Kiedis accused Faith No More/Mr. Bungle singer Mike Patton of ripping off his on-stage and music video performance style for “Epic” in 1989, and the two have been at odds ever since. Patton has maintained, over the years, that Kiedis was responsible for Mr. Bungle’s removal from the lineups of several big festivals and concert tours.

Kiedis’s dad was pals with Sonny Bono and his ex-wife Cher. Sonny Bono was Kiedis’s godfather.

Anthony Kiedis Drug Addiction

Kiedis, along with the rest of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has struggled with substance abuse for a long time. Although Kiedis was temporarily expelled from the band in 1986 owing to his drug misuse, he was frequently the one trying to keep the members together. Slovak, the band’s guitarist, overdosed on heroin in 1988 after returning from an international tour in support of their 1987 album “Uplift.”

Kiedis did not go to the funeral because he felt that the whole tragic event was a dream. After some convincing from a buddy, he checked himself into treatment a few weeks later. He was sober for five years before he fell off the wagon in 1994. He spent the next few years in and out of treatment facilities, but as of December 2000, he is said to be sober and drug-free.

Anthony Kiedis Real Estate

Between $30 and $40 million is the estimated value of Anthony’s property portfolio in the United States. He spent $3.65 million on a house high above Hollywood’s Sunset Strip in 2013. Back in 2015, he put the house up for sale for $4.3 million.

He spent $4.85 million on a Malibu mansion in 2005, not far from Flea’s mansion there. After some negotiation, he paid $5 million for the neighboring home, expanding his seaside estate to two acres and increasing its value by an estimated $20–$30 million.

In 2005, he spent $2.6 million on three properties: one in Las Vegas, one in Michigan, and one on the North Shore of Kauai.
