Lady Whistledown recently dropped the bombshell that the third season will focus entirely on her romantic arc.

Penelope Featherington herself, Nicola Coughlan, announced the casting change on Sunday at Netflix’s FYSEE event.

“Like Lady Whistledown, I have been harboring a secret for quite some time, and I can disclose to you all that season three is Colin and Penelope’s love tale,” she stated. My secret has been safe with me since episode two of season two.

Throughout the first two seasons, Penelope makes it apparent to the audience that she has feelings for her close friend Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton), but she never tells him. Towards the end of Season 2, however, it looks as though Colin starts to view Penelope in a new light, realizing that she has always been there for him.

Newton told Netflix, “There’s so much affection for that connection.” “Which creates certain pressures, as there are those who are eager for this tale to emerge. Nonetheless, it comforts me deeply.”

Since Julia Quinn’s third Bridgerton novel centers on Benedict Bridgerton and her fourth on Penelope and Colin, this new timeline deviates from the author’s original plan. Fans, however, are unlikely to be disappointed because they have been anticipating a change in the status of the friendship pretty much since the show’s inception.

“I feel like if you see Penelope fawning over this boy for another season, you’ll be like, ‘Get it together! Come on, move on and get over it,'” Coughlan said at the panel.

While maintaining her secret identity as Lady Whistledown, Penelope and Colin’s “relationship potentially blooms into something more,” as Netflix put it.
