Farley and Chris Rock joined “SNL” in 1990. Rock, Farley, Adam Sandler, Tim Meadows, and David Spade often worked together. “Bad Boys of SNL” was their nickname. Farley’s characters featured motivational speaker Matt Foley, who lived in a van by the river. Bob Odenkirk devised the role with Farley at Second City. It was a battle for Farley to break his habits of engaging in excessive amounts of drug use, alcohol use, and overeating. He went to and left weight-loss centers, rehabilitation clinics, and meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous on a regular basis.

Nevertheless, throughout the latter half of the 1990s, Farley maintained her pattern of progressively worrying binges, some of which were rumored to entail the use of heroin and cocaine.

Adam Sandler recalls that he warned his pal, “You’re going to die from that, buddy; you’ve got to stop.” It’s not going to have a happy ending.”
