On November 8, 1966, Gordon James Ramsay entered the world in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He relocated to Stratford-upon-Avon, England with his family when he was five years old. The second of four kids, he came in as number two. As a kid, he and his family traveled around a lot because of his father’s ups and downs in the workplace. His dad was an alcoholic who abused women to the point of violence.

He eventually settled in London, where he put in time at many establishments until finding a position in the kitchen at Harvey’s under the infamously hot-tempered chef Marco Pierre White. After 2 years and 10 months on the job at Harvey’s, he finally had enough of White’s “rages and the bullying and violence.”
While working for Albert Roux and Le Gavroche in Mayfair, where Gordon Ramsay eventually met Jean-Claude Breton, his future maitre d’hotel at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, he made the decision to learn French cooking. Following Ramsay’s year at Le Gavroche, Roux offered him the position of executive chef at the ski resort Hotel Diva in the French Alps. Ramsay, aged 23 years old, went to Paris to learn from Michelin-starred chefs Guy Savoy and Joel Robuchon. He stayed in France for another three years of schooling.
Ramsay spent a year as a private chef on a boat before returning to London when he was offered the role of head chef at Pierre Koffman’s three-Michelin star La Tante Claire restaurant in Chelsea. Shortly thereafter, Ramsay’s former boss Marco Pierre White gave him the position of head chef (in exchange for a 10% share) at the Rossmore, which he renamed Aubergine and, 14 months later, received his first Michelin star. His empire grew fast from that point on. He started (and shut down) several well-known eateries, had his own series on U.S. television called “Hell’s Kitchen,” was featured on the Food Network, and basically took over the globe one plate at a time. Fox also showed a “Kitchen Nightmares” remake filmed in the United States. Fox canceled “Kitchen Nightmares” and replaced it with “Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back.”
Ramsay’s judging and producing work on the American “MasterChef” in 2010 was widely praised. After starring in “Gordon’s Great Escape,” a travelogue about his time in India, he starred in a series based in Asia.
