More than 500,000 people have fled Ukraine since Russia invaded the country last week, according to the UN refugee agency.
Filippo Grandi, the UNHCR High Commissioner for Refugees, tweeted the estimate.
According to UNHCR spokeswoman Shabia Mantoo, the current count shows 281,000 individuals entering Poland, more than 84,500 in Hungary, 36,400 in Moldova, over 32,500 in Romania, and about 30,000 in Slovakia.
She claimed the rest were dispersed throughout unspecified foreign countries. Przemysl, a Polish town in the southeast, welcomed hundreds of new Ukrainian refugees early on Monday.
They were dressed in winter coats to protect them from near-freezing conditions as they waited for the platform to the exit with small luggage. As a sign of their relief at being out of the conflict zone, some waved to the cameras. Many of them were on the phone.
This picture from Syria protesting war in Ukraine actually made me tear up.
