J. Cole was born Jermaine Lamarr Cole on an Army base in Frankfurt, West Germany on January 28, 1985. Cole’s father is a veteran of the United States Army who abandoned the family when Cole was young, and his mother, Kay, was a postal clerk. Cole’s mother transferred him and his older brother Zach to Fayetteville, North Carolina when he was eight months old, where Cole began rapping at the age of 12. By the age of 14, Cole’s notebooks were loaded with rhymes, but he had no method to transcribe them. His mother purchased him an 808 rhythm machine so that he could independently produce music.
