In spite of Tsai’s initial interest in the idea of a worldwide import and export market, it was the ferocity and fervor of Ma’s supporters that convinced Tsai to join them.

A few months after his departure from Investor AB in 2013, Ma gave him the chance to join the company’s founding staff for a pittance, and he accepted the offer. Only Tsai, the only Western-educated member of the 18 co-founders of Alibaba, was paid $600 per year. He was a board member, CEO, and CFO of the company he helped build.

Alibaba’s entire financial and organizational structure was created by him, as none of the other members of the team had any history in venture capital or law. Earlier this year, in May, he was designated Alibaba’s executive vice chairman. In the wake of Ma, he has risen to the position of Alibaba’s second-largest shareholder.
