His father committed suicide by shooting himself. He went to Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, for his undergraduate education and received a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the institution in 1967. After that, in 2008, the university presented him with an honorary degree of Doctor of Science (Sc.D.).

John McAfee Career

McAfee worked at NASA’s Institute for Space Studies in New York City from 1968 through 1970 after finishing his undergraduate degree. His role in the program was that of a programmer. Before joining Xerox as an operating system architect, he worked as a software designer at Univac after leaving NASA.

Starting in 1978, McAfee worked as a software consultant for Computer Sciences Corporation, marking his entry into the consulting industry. Then, from 1980 to 1982, he spent two years at the Booz Allen Hamilton consulting business.

In the 1980s, while still employed at Lockheed, McAfee began building virus-fighting software. Specifically, after obtaining a copy of the Brain computer virus, he started developing anti-virus software. McAfee quit his previous position in 1987 to establish McAfee Associates as a standalone anti-virus software development firm for personal computers.

The business officially registered as a Delaware corporation in 1992. After working for the company for two more years, he finally decided to leave in 1994. Two years after McAfee’s colleagues went public, he sold his whole investment in the company for $100 million due to boredom with the software business.

The company Network Associates was formed when McAfee Associates and Network General amalgamated in 1997. Following a successful rebranding effort, Network Associates became McAfee, Inc. seven years later. As of August of 2010, Intel owned McAfee Inc. Until January 2014, when Intel began marketing McAfee-related products under the name Intel Security, it used a name that was distinct from Intel.

After being part of Intel for many years, the McAfee, Inc. division was separated from the company in 2017 and formed into a joint venture with TPG Capital under the name McAfee, LLC.

A series of bad investments, including a large bet on Lehman Brothers’ bonds, cost McAfee millions and forced him to sell real estate and other assets for pennies on the dollar. For instance, McAfee received $5.7 million for the sale of a $25 million mansion he owned in Colorado. He also sold a mansion in Hawaii, a ranch in New Mexico, and a Cessna private jet.

John McAfee Legal Issues

McAfee’s former home was in Orange Walk Town, Belize. The Belizean Police Department’s Gang Suppression Unit conducted a raid on his home in April 2012. McAfee was taken into custody by the police for allegedly manufacturing drugs without a license and carrying a firearm without a permit, but he was eventually freed without any charges being filed against him.

In November of the same year (2012), McAfee became the focus of a murder investigation in Belize involving an American ex-pat. In Belize, on November 11, 2012, the body of Gregory Viant Faull was discovered in his home. A gunshot wound proved fatal for him. Law enforcement was curious about McAfee’s ties to Faull because Faull had been his neighbor.

The Belizean authorities were looking for McAfee in connection with Faull’s murder, but he succeeded up escaping the country. On December 5, 2012, he was arrested for illegal entry into Guatemala while attempting to claim refuge in Guatemala City. His asylum claim was rejected, and he was held in a Guatemalan detention camp awaiting deportation.

Later, on December 6, 2012, McAfee was released and deported back to the United States from Guatemala, where he had reportedly suffered two small heart attacks while in jail. McAfee claimed he staged heart attacks so his lawyer would have more time to appeal his conviction.

Since then, McAfee has had numerous other brushes with the law. After an August 2015 DUI/DWI arrest in Tennessee, he was also found to be in possession of a handgun while under the influence.

The wrongful death lawsuit filed against McAfee for Faull’s death in Guatemala was not dismissed in November 2018 by the Circuit Court in Orlando, Florida. Subsequently, a Grand Jury was constituted in early 2019 to prosecute him on tax-related crimes following the filing of yet another lawsuit against him. To avoid capture by U.S. authorities, he declared in January 2019 that he had taken refuge on a boat.

Further arrests of him have occurred on multiple occasions. He was taken into custody in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, in July of this year. After four days in custody, he was freed.

After a request from the U.S. Department of Justice, he was taken into custody in Spain in October 2020 on charges of tax evasion.

The government of Spain stated on June 23, 2021, that they would consent to John’s extradition to the United States. The tragedy of John’s suicide occurred later that day. He was 75.
