Kim Potter, The Assassin Of Daunte Wright, Was Freed From Custody

Kim Potter, a former Minnesota police officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright and was found guilty of manslaughter, has been let go from prison.

Wright, a 20-year-old Black male, was shot and killed in the Minneapolis suburb during a traffic stop in April 2011 by Potter, a 26-year member of the Brooklyn Center Police Department and former union president.

The man’s rearview mirror was dangling with an air freshener and an expired registration tab. When police discovered that Wright had an outstanding warrant, Potter attempted to hold him. She allegedly shot him after mistaking her gun for her Taser.

Potter was given a 24 month prison term after being found guilty of first- and second-degree manslaughter, but was freed after serving 16 months. But up to the end of her term in December 2023, she will continue to be under under supervision. She might have received a sentence of up to 25 years in prison and fines of $50,000.

According to a press release from the Minnesota Department of Corrections, the ex-cop was freed from the Minnesota Correctional Facility – Shakopee on Monday around 4 a.m.

“Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of Ms. Potter, DOC staff, and the security of the correctional facility,” the department said. Potter had received threats within the building, the department added.

Speaking on behalf of the department, Andy Skoogman said, “Based on the intelligence we gathered, we released Ms. Potter at a time we felt was safest for her and for everyone at the correctional facility.”

Daunte Wright’s mother, Katie Wright, admitted that while she was looking forward to Potter’s release, she had found “peace” in the knowledge that Potter would not be able to secure another position in police enforcement.

Katie Wright told CNN that “she will never be able to hurt anyone as a police officer again.” “That is the only feeling of tranquility our family experiences.”
