Man Enters A Guilty Plea In The North Clinton Avenue Beating Death

According to the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, a Rochester man entered a guilty plea on Thursday for the 2022 beating death of Gerald Wayne Irvin, 65, on North Clinton Avenue in Rochester.

In connection with the murder of Irvin, 20-year-old Traveon Gates admitted to first-degree manslaughter, a felony, and third-degree criminal sale of a controlled narcotic, also a felony.

On April 18, 2022, just before two in the morning, Irwin was attacked while out for a stroll on North Clinton Avenue. When he was “knocked to the ground and viciously beaten,” according to authorities, he had a serious head injury. Irvin passed away on May 29, 2022, due to his wounds.

According to the police, Gates captured some of the attack in Irwin on his cellphone.

Among the most violent assaults I have seen, according to Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Hyatt, who prosecuted the case alongside ADA Matthew Hogestyn, was the vicious assault that killed Gerald Wayne Irvin.

“There was no rhyme or reason to it. Despite having numerous chances to leave the victim alone, Treveon Gates kept beating Mr. Irvin even after he became unresponsive.

Gates will serve 30 years in a state jail and be subject to post-release monitoring for five years. On July 18, Justice Judith Sinclair of the Texas Supreme Court will sentence him.
