Gonzalez is most known for playing Enid Maitland alongside William Duncan in Vitagraph’s six-reel, full-length drama The Chalice of Courage (1915). She was been referred to as “The Virgin White Lily of the Screen” by a magazine writer.

Manuel George Gonzalez (1868-1919) and Lillian L. Cook’s daughter Myrtle were born on September 28, 1891, in Los Angeles, California (1874–1932). Manuel G. Gonzalez Jr. (1898-?) and Stella M. Gonzalez (1892-1965) were her siblings.

Her father came from a Mexican-Hispanic family known as a Californio, who had lived in this region for many years before the US annexed it. Her mother was a well-known opera soprano who was the offspring of Irish immigrants. Her father ran a little grocery store.

Myrtle had a good soprano voice and showed amazing dramatic talent from an early age.

She performed in church choirs and made numerous local appearances at concerts and fundraisers. Later, she appeared on stage alongside Fanny Davenport and Florence Stone in child roles.

Around 1910, Gonzalez wed James Parks Jones. Before being divorced, they had one child together, James Parks Jones Jr. (ca. 1911-1970).

She greatly benefited from the move of movie production to her hometown because she was born and raised in Los Angeles. Gonzalez worked for Universal and Vitagraph, among other studios.
