Businessman Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy is an Indian billionaire. He founded Infosys and served as its president, chief mentor, chairman, and chief executive officer (CEO) until resigning and assuming the title of chairman emeritus.
N. R. Narayana Murthy was born on August 20, 1946, into a middle-class Kannada family in Sidlaghatta in Mysore, a city in the south-western Indian state of Karnataka (now the Chikkaballapura district, Karnataka, India). He attended the National Institute of Engineering after completing his secondary schooling, where he earned his electrical engineering degree in 1967. His master’s degree came from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1969.
At IIM Ahmedabad, Murthy originally served as a research associate for a faculty member before rising to the position of a principal systems programmer. There, for Electronics Corporation of India Limited, he devised and implemented a BASIC interpreter while working on India’s first time-sharing computer system. He founded the business Softronics. He joined Patni Computer Systems in Pune after that business failed after roughly a year and a half.
Murthy states that he became a “compassionate capitalist” from a “confused leftist/communist” after being arbitrarily detained and exiled in a communist border town in 1974, which inspired him to found Infosys.
With an initial capital investment of Rs 10,000 from his wife Sudha Murthy, Murthy and his six software professionals launched Infosys in 1981.
Co-founder Nandan Nilekani succeeded Murthy as CEO of Infosys after he served as such for 21 years, from 1981 to 2002. He developed, devised, and put into action at Infosys a worldwide delivery model for outsourcing IT services from India. From 2002 until 2006, he served as the board’s chairman. Subsequently, he also took on the role of chief mentor. He left the corporation in August 2011 and was given the title of chairman emeritus.
Murthy has served as a director on the boards of DBS Bank, Unilever, ICICI, and NDTV. He is currently an independent director on the corporate board of HSBC.
He serves on the advisory boards and councils of numerous academic and charitable organizations, including Cornell University, INSEAD, ESSEC, Ford Foundation, UN Foundation, Indo-British Partnership, Asian Institute of Management, and Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He is also a trustee of the Infosys Prize and the Rhodes Trust. Additionally, he serves as the Public Health Foundation of India’s Chairman of the Governing Board. He serves on the British Telecommunications advisory board for the Asia Pacific. He served as co-chair of the Davos World Economic Forum in 2005.

Sudha Murthy, his wife, is a successful businesswoman, educator, author, and head of the Infosys Foundation. Rohan Murty, a son, and Akshata Murty, a daughter, are Murthy’s two children.
Rohan began working for Infosys in June 2013 as his father’s executive assistant. In June 2014, he departed Infosys. Akshata wed Rishi Sunak in 2009, who eventually rose to prominence as the Richmond, Yorkshire, MP, Conservative Party leader, and British prime minister.
