New Rock Band Game: Possible Gameplay and Launch Date

MTV Games and Electronic Arts publish and distribute Rock Band, which Harmonix invented. It started the Rock Band series. The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii versions were released in North America on November 20, 2007, December 18, 2007, and June 22, 2008, respectively.

Harmonix’s original two Guitar Hero games using guitar-shaped controllers delighted rock music enthusiasts. After Neversoft acquired the property, Harmonix created Rock Band with multi-instrument playability.

Up to four people can play rock hits with controllers modeled after actual instruments. Players can sing using a USB microphone and “instrument controllers” to play lead guitar, bass guitar, and drums. Players are graded by how effectively they match the singer’s pitch or play with scrolling musical chords or scales.

Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers can play online and locally. In addition to the disc’s 58 tracks, Xbox 360 and PS3 owners could download over two thousand more music. Video game software was sold separately and with instrument peripherals. Instrument accessories were sold subsequently. Critics and consumers liked the game, which sold four million copies and made $600 million worldwide.

Rock Band players have downloaded over 100 million tunes. Rock Band 2, The Beatles: Rock Band, Lego Rock Band, Green Day: Rock Band, Rock Band 3, and Rock Band 4 followed the game’s success.

Rock Band simulates rock music with real instruments utilizing Guitar Hero gameplay. The player plays along as the screen’s “notes” scrolls. Rock Band expands on Guitar Hero by adding drum and voice games to lead and bass guitar.

Rock Band’s gameplay and UI blend Guitar Hero and Karaoke Revolution. Rock Band has three vertically scrolling color-coded music notation tracks for lead guitar, drums, and bass. Guitar and drum controller buttons match colored on-screen notes.

Holding down colored fret buttons on the guitar peripheral and pushing the controller’s strum bar creates lead and bass guitar notes. Playing the drums requires striking the matching colored drumhead or stepping on the pedal to replicate bass drum beats. Like Karaoke Revolution, the voice display spans the screen horizontally. Lyrics appear below green bars showing vocal component pitch.

Vocal performances require pitch matching. Pitch indicators reveal how close the vocalist is to the original note. On-screen band members finish the concert. Players track their score multipliers and “Overdrive” during cooperative play. Playing all white notes in a song segment perfectly unlocks Overdrive (or use the whammy bar on the guitar controller while playing sustained white letters).

When the Energy Meter hits halfway, players can engage Overdrive to increase “Band Meter” shifts (which measures how well each player is doing). Thus, players can use Overdrive to raise their Band Meter and conquer difficult song portions. Overdrive activates note streak-dependent point multipliers. Players can individually deploy Overdrive and gather more resources while it is active and draining.

Each band member determines difficulty (spanning Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert). If a musician’s performance falls below the Band Meter’s “Fail” level, they’re booted out and their instrument is muted. Overdrive can “rescue” a struggling band member.

Before losing a song, a band member might be called back twice. Doomed band members will keep lowering the Band Meter until rescue. The band will fail if the player is not saved before the Band Meter reaches 0. “Uniform Phrases” earn overdrive points, while “Big Rock Endings” earn even more.

Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers can customize their virtual band members, including hairdo, body type, attire, tattoos, stage motions, and instruments, unlike PS2 and Wii users. One device per individual. The “Rock Shop” lets players customize their rock star with game currency. In-game art makers allow players to design face painting, tattoos, outfits, instrument artwork, and band logos.

MTV and Harmonix heavily promoted Rock Band before its release. A nationwide tour announced the game. Tour buses set up demo stations in major U.S. cities to show off the game to excited fans. Universities were investigated. In addition, MTV casting directors selected two fan-made “bands” to compete in a “battle of the bands” on Total Request Live based on their in-game performances.

The tour began at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas on September 9. Extra advertising costs MTV $30 million. The Real World participants streamed the game from their homes. VH1 also developed “Rock Band Cometh: The Rock Band Band Story,” a short parody of Behind the Music that follows a fictional band playing the game.

Play the game at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Sam’s Club demo kiosks. The 15-song demo allows four-instrument play (although the in-store setup varied). Instead of a bass pedal, the demo drum set programmed bass drum tones into the soundtrack. Rock Band was popularised by free and cheap downloadable content from other companies.

In June 2008, Best Buy provided customers with two Disturbed tracks for pre-ordering Indestructible online. All users could buy these tracks for $0.99/80MSP. McDonald’s offered two weekly $1 downloads as part of its Dollar Menu campaign in May 2008. (about half the regular price). The Automatic, The Whip, and The Courteeners performed brief London gigs to celebrate the game’s release.
