According to TMZ Sports, retired Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis received the tragic news on Thursday that his son, Ray Lewis III, had passed away.
Ray Lewis III, a 28-year-old former running back, was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2013. He played for the Miami Hurricanes, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, and the Virginia Union Panthers after excelling at Lake Mary Prep H.S. in Florida.
After hearing the news of his former player’s passing, Virginia Union associate head coach Diego Ryland talked to TMZ Sports, calling the deceased “[a] fantastic young guy and a greater comrade. The whole student body and faculty at Virginia Union University are thinking about and praying for Ray’s loved ones.

The son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Ray Lewis, who played college football, has passed away. He had just turned 28.
Rahsaan Lewis, Lewis’s younger brother, announced the news on Twitter.
It stated, “Really can’t believe I’m even typing this but RIP big brother,” and was uploaded to his verified Instagram account’s story in memory of him.
There has been no announcement on Lewis III’s cause of death.
Lewis III played running back for Lake Mary Prep High School in Florida. After graduating from high school, he played collegiate football at Miami, Coastal Carolina, and Virginia Union.
Ray Lewis, now 48, was an NFL player for the Baltimore Ravens from 1996 to 2012. At the end of his career, he had won two Super Bowls, been named the MVP of Super Bowl 35, and been named the defensive player of the year twice. In 2018, he was honored with a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
A heartbroken statement was issued by Mark James, his former coach at Virginia Union who left the school in 2017:

Who Was Ray Lewis III?
Ray Lewis III, the eldest son of the former Baltimore Ravens linebacker of the same name, was a college football player who was born on June 4, 1995.
Ray III suited up for both the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and the Virginia Union Panthers during his time in collegiate football.
His father, Ray Jr., also played with the Hurricanes from 1993 to 1995, so he was the second generation in his family to do so.
He changed careers after completing his studies at Virginia Union University.
