McCreery, the son of Judy (née Cooke) and Michael McCreery, was born in Garner, North Carolina, on October 9, 1993. On their way to the hospital, his parents decided against the name Evan that they had originally intended for him. McCreery’s father, a production systems analyst for Schneider Electric, was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, to a military father and a Puerto Rican mother from San Juan.

Both of his parents later relocated to Aberdeen, North Carolina. McCreery is one-quarter Puerto Rican. For Fonville Morisey, McCreery’s mother works as a real estate agent. Elvis became McCreery’s first musical inspiration when his grandmother gave him a book about him when he was about five or six years old. When he was nine or ten years old, he started taking guitar lessons.

McCreery went to Garner Magnet High School, Apex’s West Lake Middle School, and Timber Drive Elementary School. He sang in the choruses at all three of his schools, and he also performed at his middle school’s graduation.

He was selected Rookie of the Year when he was a freshman in high school and sang tenor. He began singing in his church in his second year after switching to bass singing. After graduating from Garner Magnet High School in 2012, he went on to study communications at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
