A county sheriff’s office has launched an inquiry after six cows were discovered dead, maimed, and with their tongues “completely removed” along a state highway in east-central Texas, according to police.

According to a statement from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, ranchers in the county received the first report of a 6-year-old longhorn-cross cow that was found dead and mangled, lying on her side.

According to the sheriff’s office, the cow’s tongue was removed “without any blood spill” and the hide surrounding one side of its mouth was cut away “straight, clean, and with apparent precision.”

Investigators who were looking into the death of the longhorn-cross discovered five additional cows that had also been discovered in a cruel state. According to officials, each cow came from a distinct pasture and herd and was discovered in a different spot along the state highway in the surrounding counties of Brazos and Robertson.

A circular cut had also been made, removing the anus and external genitalia from two of the cows. The sheriff’s office stated that “this circular cut was made with the same precision as the cuts noted around the jaw lines of each cow.”

According to officials, the area around any of the cows contained no footprints or tire tracks, nor were there any indications of a struggle or blood loss.

The sheriff’s office notes that there have been “multiple similar incidents” in the US and says that it is working with other law enforcement agencies to gather information.

The sheriff’s office stated that all six cows’ causes of death are still undetermined and urged anyone with knowledge to contact them.
