The Hogwarts Legacy Controversy: We now have official minimum and recommended PC requirements for the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy. If you’re debating between the PC and console releases, this is useful information to have if you want to go on your wizarding adventure on a personal computer.
What Is The Source of The Hogwarts Legacy Controversy?
Despite the controversy surrounding Potter creator J.K. Rowling and some calls to boycott the game, Warner Bros. Games’ upcoming “Hogwarts Legacy,” situated in the universe of Harry Potter, is showing hints that it could be a smash.
Despite not coming out until February 10, the game was the best-selling title on the game distribution site Steam on Monday and Tuesday. It also outsold other soon-to-be-released games like “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” and “Dead Space” on Tuesday in the PlayStation Store’s “coming soon” section.
The player of the open-world role-playing game “Hogwarts Legacy” will assume the character of a student at Hogwarts during the 1800s in the Harry Potter universe. Next month, it will launch for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, followed by release dates in the summer for previous-gen systems and the Nintendo Switch. Despite Rowling’s recent controversy over anti-trans statements, early sales data suggests the game could be a smash.
The Rowling criticism dates all the way back to Rowling’s tweets in 2020 when she said: “The lived reality of women around the world disappears if sex doesn’t exist. Though I have a lot of respect for transgender persons, I believe that doing away with the concept of sex will prevent many from having honest conversations about their experiences. It’s not hateful to tell people how it really is.”
Rowling has now reinforced her stance, leading some to call for a boycott of “Hogwarts Legacy,” including transgender YouTuber Jessie Earl (aka Jessie Gender), who has nearly 200,000 subscribers. In a December tweet, Rowling responded to Earl’s request for a boycott by saying, in part, that Earl “doesn’t comprehend pure think is incompatible with owning ANYTHING related to me, in ANY way.”
On the game’s FAQ page, Warner Bros. Games clarifies that Rowling had no hand in developing the game and that it is “not a fresh story from her.” Warner Bros. Games stated at the time that while “J.K. Rowling is not directly engaged in the creation of the game,” her “amazing body of literature” serves as the “basis” for all ventures set in the Wizarding World. To make sure the game is consistent with the “wonderful experiences fans demand,” it was stated that “we have engaged closely with her team on all parts of the game.”
Insider reached out to Warner Bros. Games for comment on whether or not Rowling would be paid for “Hogwarts Legacy,” but received no response. However, Rowling has tremendous influence over the Harry Potter franchise. In 2013, after the original film series had been completed, Warner Bros. signed an agreement with her to release additional content based on the Harry Potter universe, including the “Fantastic Beasts” films.

However, Warner Bros. appears to have taken care to not let the uproar around the author’s transphobic statements destroy its relationship with her.
In response to her initial comments in 2020, Warner Bros. issued a statement in which they did not name her but said, in part, “We recognize our responsibility to foster empathy and advocate understanding of all communities and all people, particularly those we work with and those we reach through our content.”
In contrast, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, stated in November that the company was “going to have a real focus on franchises” and that it was interested in doing “something with J.K. on Harry Potter going forward,” implying that the company not only needs to collaborate with Rowling on any future content but is also willing to do so. How Much Money Can J.K. Rowling Make Off of Hogwarts Legacy?
She receives royalties from any product with the official Potter label, including Hogwarts Legacy, because she is the IP owner. The game is not based on a story written by her, however, Portkey Games did collaborate closely with her team to construct the game’s environment, as stated on the official website. That’s money in Rowling’s pocket, and because there’s a $59.99 and $69.99 version of the game coming out, she stands to make quite a bit.
You shouldn’t buy Hogwarts Legacy because Rowling hates trans people. As unlucky as that is, it’s not the only issue at hand.
