Model and actor Tyson Beckford was born in the United States. Before transitioning to a career in cinema and television, Beckford became famous as the first African-American male supermodel while working as a model for the clothing designer Ralph Lauren.
On December 19, 1970, in Rochester, New York, the world was introduced to Tyson Craig Beckford, who would later go by his stage name. Lloyd is of Chinese and Afro-Jamaican ancestry, while his mother, Hillary, is of Afro-Jamaican lineage. Tyson spent the first seven years of his life in Jamaica before returning to Rochester with his family.
Beckford was able to take advantage of a busing program that shuttled kids from the city to outlying high schools like Pittsford Mendon, one of the best in the state. Tyson has a single sister named Shanique, and he was a star football and track athlete in high school.
Jeff Jones, a talent scout, spotted Beckford in 1992 at New York City’s Washington Square Park and subsequently signed him to “The Source” magazine. Ralph Lauren’s Polo clothing brand hired him as a model the following year. VH1 named Tyson #38 on their “40 Hottest Hotties of the ’90s” list, and he signed with NYC’s Soul Artist Management and Milan’s D’management Group. In addition to his roles in the films “Trois 2: Pandora’s Box” and “Gully.” He was a contestant on the reality show “Here I Am, a Famous Person… Get Me Out of Here!” in 2003, and he had a guest starring role as “Sexy Guy” on UPN’s “Half & Half” that same year.” After that, Tyson went on to star in movies including 2005’s “Searching for Bobby D,” 2006’s “Into the Blue,” and 2007’s “Kings of the Evening.”
In the first season of “Make Me a Supermodel,” Beckford shared hosting duties with model Niki Taylor. He has also judged “America’s Next Top Model” and “Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model,” as well as the Australian version of the show.
Tyson spent several weeks in 2015 performing with Chippendales at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Beckford was hurt in Secaucus, New Jersey, in June 2005 when he crashed his Dodge Ram pickup truck into a utility pole. Beckford escaped the burning car and was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment of his injuries (which included wounds and a concussion).
As an ambassador, Tyson has helped spread the word about Kick 4 Life, a charity that utilizes soccer to “change the lives of disadvantaged young people in Lesotho and in doing so promote long-term sustainable development in the Mountain Kingdom.” He participated in the National RESPECT!
