A Utah lady was charged with her husband’s murder on Monday after penning a children’s book about grieving his passing.
Kouri Richins, 33, is accused of adding five times the fatal amount of fentanyl to her husband Eric’s drink.
Richins appeared on numerous regional television shows earlier this year to promote her book “Are You With Me?” which was created to assist kids in understanding and coping with the loss of a loved one.
Richins stated in a “Good Things Utah” broadcast on local ABC affiliate KTVX, “It’s explaining to my kid, just because he’s not present here with us physically, doesn’t mean his presence isn’t here with us.
According to authorities, her husband was “not present here with [them] physically,” but Richins was the cause of that.
Prosecutors claim that on the evening of March 3, 2022, Richins made her husband a cocktail and served it to him in bed at their Kamas home. She then departed to spend the night with one of their young kids.
Eric Richins was cold to the touch when she arrived at three in the morning, so she dialed 911. First responders attempted to save Eric’s life, but he was later declared dead at the spot.
During the book’s promotion, Richins claimed that her husband passed away suddenly. Prosecutors said an autopsy showed he had enough fentanyl in him to kill five people.

Before she and Eric had a Valentine’s Day dinner, police claimed Richins contacted a “unnamed acquaintance” to obtain some fentanyl, according to local CBS station KUTV. Eric “became very ill” at the dinner but recovered, according to the detectives.
According to authorities, Eric told his friends and family just before he passed away that “[his wife] was to blame if anything happened to him,” according to local NPR affiliate KPCW. Even his will was amended to benefit his sister rather than his wife.
Richins allegedly contacted her supplier again for additional fentanyl after Eric had recovered from the Valentine’s Day supper, according to the police.
On the evening of March 3, according to investigators, Richins spiked her husband’s drink with that fentanyl.
She was charged with three charges of possession with intent to distribute and one crime of aggravated murder more than a year later. Her subsequent court date is set on May 19.
