‘Vera’ Season 11 continues into 2022 with more cracking murder mysteries.
Vera Season 11 has begun on ITV in the United Kingdom and on BritBox in the United States. Since 2011, when DCI Vera Stanhope investigated her first case, she has been a huge hit with viewers worldwide.
We’ve followed Vera for years as she solves murder after murder in the northeast of England, thanks to her no-nonsense approach and scruffy appearance. But what is it about Brenda Blethyn’s prickly cop, based on the best-selling books by Anne Cleeves, that keeps us glued to our televisions.
How many Vera series exist?
There have been ten complete seasons of Vera, and this new season is the eleventh, consisting of six episodes. Vera Season 11 will conclude in January 2022. (see above).
Vera is filmed in which location?
Vera is filmed throughout the English county of Northumberland, from its stunning open dune-lined beaches, dramatic castles such as Bamburgh and Alnwick, and forests such as Kielder, to small towns and villages in the north east such as Whitley Bay and Amble, and the swanky bars and restaurants of Newcastle city centre. Each episode of Vera makes us want to visit the area! Specifically, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, which is home to Vera.
“The exterior of Vera’s home was shot on Holy Island, while the interior was created in our Wallsend studio,” Brenda explains. “The interior of the studio is an exact replica of what life is like on Lindisfarne. Occasionally, when I’m on set, I forget I’m not in Vera’s house!”

‘Vera’ Season 11 — Episodes 1 and 2 in 2021
Vera investigates the murder of builder Jim Tullman (Gavin Kitchen) in the first of two episodes. When Vera learns that Jim was scheduled to testify in court, she wonders if this is the reason for his murder, but she soon uncovers a web of family grievances, jealousies, and lies. Lorraine Ashbourne makes a cameo appearance as Barbara Tullman.
Angela, a support worker, is found murdered in the bleak woodlands of Northumberland National Park in the second episode of Vera. However, was the assassination an impulsive act or was it meticulously planned? Angela worked for a women’s addiction recovery centre but kept her colleagues at a distance and clashed with clients just before she died…does the centre hold the key to the case? Former Emmerdale star Sian Reese-Williams guest stars in this episode, as does Shakespeare & Hathaway’s Mark Benton and former Brookside star Louis Emerick.
“I was relieved to resume work for a variety of reasons. However, Brenda Blethyn admits, she was nervous about it. “We were in the midst of a global pandemic, and nobody was safe, but when it was explained to me about all the precautions that would be taken, and believe me, they were very thorough, I became a little less nervous. I was interviewed on the phone by a Covid detective, and medicals were conducted to ensure I wasn’t too vulnerable. Medicals are required for any filming for insurance purposes, and they really just want to know you’re going to make it to the end.
“Covid did make filming more difficult; it added about a week to each episode’s production time. At first, the Covid protocol was a little inhibiting, but we quickly got used to it. It became a sort of dance; if someone approached you, you naturally stepped backwards. And if anyone forgot, the Covid marshals were over to you with a long stick, not to strike you, but to ensure you were the proper distance apart.
“I believe everyone felt a tremendous sense of pride on the first day of filming, that we had all come together and were all putting our best foot forward to try and get this done, despite the fact that we all knew it would be difficult given the restrictions.”

DCI Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) and her colleague DS Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty) are summoned to a port to investigate a botched heist. When a container lorry detaches at high speed and two workers are critically injured, the big question is: Was it an inside job?
The fatal hit and run occurs at a container port in Blyth, just outside Newcastle, and eagle-eyed Vera immediately suspects a botched heist.
“Vera and Aiden descend to investigate,” Brenda Blethyn explains. “The lorry struck one man and he fled. Gary Mallon, a security guard, has been hospitalised. Vera and DS Healy begin questioning port workers, suspecting the heist may be an inside job. However, the case quickly takes an unexpected turn when Gary’s ex-wife delivers distressing news.
“Her and Gary’s son has been abducted,” Brenda continues. “Suddenly, the situation becomes much more complicated, and it develops into a murder case.”
Jake Lawson, a young actor, portrays Joe Mallon, a 13-year-old kidnap victim who is taken to a remote house. Other guest stars include Bill Ward (ex-Coronation Street and Emmerdale) as Joe’s stepfather Peter, Joe McGann (Hollyoaks) as businessman Julian Carr, and Charlie Hardwick (best known for her long-running role as Emmerdale’s Val Pollard) as fearsome matriarch Grace Webley, who leads a family of organised criminals. Vera faces serious repercussions as the investigation progresses when she clashes with a National Crime Agency officer conducting a covert surveillance operation at the port.
“Vera is not your run-of-the-mill detective,” Brenda explains. ‘Occasionally, people tell me, “You don’t see coppers dressed like that in a police station.” “How many times have you been in a police station?” I ask them.
What is Vera’s claim to fame?
Vera is well-known for her fisherman’s hat. Vera would not be Vera without her infamous green hat, which she never leaves behind while out on an investigation. Vera’s fashion style oozes “down to earth” when paired with a similar green raincoat and comfortable boots.
“Vera dresses in a way that is most comfortable for her. She is unconcerned about how it looks; she is focused on solving crimes “Brenda explains. “I’ll reveal a secret to you. I purchased the boots she is wearing in Birmingham for £12 twenty years ago. They are children’s shoes — I have small feet — but I knew they would come in handy at some point. Ideal for Vera.”
