She frantically dialed her roommate’s number, but there was no response. The two people eventually decided to contact the police.

As the police arrived, they discovered Kercher’s bloodied body inside her bedroom. Knox and Sollecito were hauled to the police station and questioned for five days because they were the ones who found the scene. Knox stayed in jail despite her family’s pleading; she later disclosed that she had been abused by guards.

At some point on the evening of November 1, 2007, while Sollecito was asleep in his apartment, Knox signed a confession stating that she had returned to her hostel. She claims that the Congolese bar owner Diya Patrick Lumumba murdered Kercher in her room with a knife. However, he was quickly eliminated as a suspect by authorities after they verified his impeccable alibi.
