Where is Sarma Melngailis Now: If there is one thing that we enjoy doing more than anything else, it would have to be watching a true crime documentary that keeps us guessing from the very beginning all the way through to the very conclusion. It would appear that Netflix has that market segment well covered, what with the recent releases of Inventing Anna, The Tinder Swindler, and now Bad Vegan, which narrates the weird story of flesh suits, immortality, and of course, money.
Fortunately, it would appear that Netflix has that area covered in its entirety. In anticipation of the March 16 release of the four-part series Bad Vegan, which is only minutes away from being available to stream in its entirety, we did a deep dive into the murder that captivated New York to find out about the real individuals behind the tale, as well as where they are today.
This was done in preparation for the release of the series, which is only minutes away from being available to stream in its entirety.

Sarma Melngailis Biography
Sarma Melngailis founded Pure Food and Wine in New York in 2005, drawing celebrities like Owen Wilson and Alec Baldwin. Melngailis’ restaurant was in New York Magazine’s Top 100 Restaurants and Forbes’ All-Star New York Eateries for five years. Everything was OK until 2011 when Melngailis met Anthony Strangis online and started dating him after meeting in person. Strangis married Melngailis the next year after promising to make her financially independent without investors in her business.
Strangis immediately spent Melngailis’ money, transferring $1.6m from corporate accounts to her personal bank account. Melngailis told Vanity Fair that Strangis promised her “infinite money” and that her dog would “be eternal and secure to remain at my side forever.” Strangis’ attorneys refute this. Netflix said that Melngailis stated Strangis informed her he was “non-human” and that his body was “a flesh suit.”
Melngailis couldn’t pay her Pure Food and Wine employees by 2014, and many quit the following year. The restauranteur also requested contributions from former customers, alleging she had withdrawn business funds to aid her mother. Melngailis reopened her restaurant after receiving more investors, but she continued to siphon corporate assets for Strangis.
Where Does Sarma Melngailis Live?
According to a story from The New York Post, Melngailis currently resides in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City with her rescued dog, Leon. This information was obtained from a reliable source. In spite of the reassurances that Strangis gave to Melngailis, there is cause for us to assume that Leon is not yet immortal at this point in time.
Melngailis told Netflix’s Tudum, “Having Leon here with me offers me a tremendous lot of stability, and I am really grateful for that. Touching his face, looking into his eyes, and assuring him that everything is going to be okay are things that I do from time to time when I’m feeling nervous or irritated. My anxiety is reduced, and I have a more positive outlook on the issue as a result of this. I suppose you could say that I’m attempting to reassure myself.
We, on the other hand, suffer separation anxiety anytime our human companions leave the house, in contrast to certain dogs, who experience it whenever their human carer leaves the house. It’s not that Leon is in any kind of danger; rather, being away from him makes me anxious about the future.”
What Happened to Sarma Melngailis?
Melngailis and Strangis were found in Tennessee in May 2016, having fled New York while the authorities pursued them for fraud. Melngailis was arrested after buying pizza and chicken wings from a fast food restaurant, which is ironic given that he previously owned a vegan eatery. At the time of their capture, the couple had been hiding out at the hotel for 40 days.
Both Melngailis and Strangis pleaded guilty to reduced charges in exchange for reduced sentences; the reduced counts included second-degree grand larceny, second-degree criminal tax fraud, and first-degree scheme to defraud. Melngailis admitted to stealing over $200,000 from an investor and to additional criminal tax fraud charges as part of a plea bargain and was given a sentence of little under four months at Rikers Island jail in New York.
Meanwhile, Strangis pleaded guilty to four charges of grand theft and received one year in prison, and five years of probation. Investors were awarded $840,000 in reparations, which he was also required to pay.
