Attacker Lynn Williams of the United States will make her FIFA Women’s World Cup debut against Portugal on Tuesday (August 1). The match will take place at Eden Park in Group E.
Williams, 30, has been selected to start for her country’s team as one of an offensive three that also includes Alex Morgan and Sophia Smith. She will likely play right side in a 4-3-3 formation.
Williams, a swift forward with the right foot, made her debut for the United States in an exhibition match against Switzerland in October 2016. In 53 games for the USWNT so far in her career, she has scored 15 goals.

The American’s rise to stardom at the club level occurred in the 2016 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season. In just her second professional season, she won the Golden Boot award with 11 goals, helping Western New York Flash win the NWSL championship. She was included in the NWSL Best XI and was crowned the 2016 NWSL Most Valuable Player.
Williams assisted her team in winning two NWSL championships in 2018 and 2019 after the Western New York Flash changed their name to North Carolina Courage in 2017. In 79 total games, she scored 41 goals for them.
The American joined Gotham FC in early January after a few loan stints at Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory in Australia. She has been in excellent form this 2023 NWSL season, tallying seven goals in her club’s first 13 games.
