The Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron scandal has seen new developments with revelations from the director who worked with the late actress on her final project. Director Lee Sun Jung, who collaborated with Kim Sae Ron on the film Guitar Man, shared his experiences working with the actress during a press conference held on May 21, 2025.

Director’s Memories of Working with Kim Sae Ron

Lee Sun Jung opened up about his decision to cast Kim Sae Ron despite the surrounding controversies. Initially, considering another actress for the role, his perspective changed completely after meeting Kim Sae Ron. The director recalled how she arrived at their first meeting having thoroughly read the script and came prepared with numerous creative ideas. Her enthusiasm for the small-scale production left a lasting impression on him.

The director particularly remembered her bright smile, describing it as something he would never forget. Despite the challenges of completing the film’s post-production after her passing in February, Lee remained committed to his promise that the movie would reach theaters.

The Struggles Behind the Scenes

However, Lee’s observations revealed the difficulties Kim Sae Ron was facing during filming. While she maintained her professionalism and smiled for the cameras, the director noticed she appeared visibly exhausted when she thought no one was watching. According to Lee, she was acutely aware of public perception and how others viewed her.

When not actively filming, Kim Sae Ron would often retreat to her car to avoid unwanted attention. One particularly concerning moment for the director was witnessing her pour alcohol into a water glass out of fear, which he described as heartbreaking. Despite her financial difficulties, she had left her part-time job at a café to dedicate herself fully to the film project.

Guitar Man’s Release

Kim Sae Ron’s final film, Guitar Man, a musical that follows a genius guitarist seeking hope through music amid harsh realities, is scheduled for release on May 30, 2025. The film features Kim Sae Ron as Yoo-jin, a keyboardist in the band “Volcano”. Director Lee Sun Jung, who also served as the lead actor, producer, screenwriter, and composer for the project, pushed forward with the release despite concerns from crew members about potential backlash.

The press screening and media briefing took place at Lotte Cinema World Tower in Seoul, where Lee expressed his determination to honor his commitment to the late actress.
