Peacock is set to expand the beloved Pitch Perfect universe with a fresh, music-driven comedy series titled Pitch Perfect: K-Pop Idols. Developed under Brownstone Productions’ new first-look deal with Universal Television, the series brings together an accomplished creative team and a timely premise that taps into the global K-pop phenomenon.

The New Chapter in the Pitch Perfect Franchise

Brownstone Productions, led by Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman, has long been synonymous with musical comedy success. Their Pitch Perfect film trilogy became a global box office sensation, grossing over $1 billion worldwide and cementing its place in pop culture history. Now, Banks and Handelman are teaming up with writer Joel Kim Booster (“Fire Island”) to deliver a new twist on the franchise’s signature blend of music and comedy.

Series Premise: From Singer-Songwriter to K-Pop Idol

Pitch Perfect: K-Pop Idols will follow the journey of a struggling singer-songwriter whose life is turned upside down when she auditions to join the first all-American K-pop group. The series promises to explore the high-stakes, high-energy world of K-pop through a comedic lens, examining what it takes to break into one of the most competitive music industries in the world.

Creative Team and Production

  • Writer & Executive Producer: Joel Kim Booster
  • Executive Producers: Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman, Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer
  • Director: Jason Moore (returning from the original Pitch Perfect film)
  • Production Companies: Brownstone Productions, Gold Circle Films
  • Network: Peacock

The project is part of Brownstone’s broader partnership with Universal Television, which will see the company develop and produce a range of new series for broadcast, streaming, and cable.

Industry Impact and Franchise Evolution

Elizabeth Banks, who has earned three Emmy nominations for her television work and directed the viral hit “Cocaine Bear,” remains a driving force behind Brownstone’s creative ventures. Universal Television president Erin Underhill praised Banks as “a singular creative force whose storytelling shines both in front and behind the camera,” underscoring the studio’s enthusiasm for the new series.

Banks and Handelman expressed excitement about their ongoing relationship with Universal, stating, “Brownstone Productions first emerged from the primordial swamps of Universal Pictures, so it’s only natural that our next evolutionary leap happens with Universal Television. We’re thrilled to continue growing with such a stellar team and deeply grateful… We’ll do our best to make them proud—and hopefully cause just the right amount of chaotic joy along the way”.

What’s Next?

Casting and further production details for Pitch Perfect: K-Pop Idols have yet to be announced. However, with a powerhouse creative team and a premise that bridges Western musical comedy and the vibrant world of K-pop, the series is already generating significant buzz.

Fans of K-pop and the Pitch Perfect franchise alike can look forward to a show that promises not just catchy tunes and sharp humor, but also a fresh perspective on the challenges and triumphs of chasing stardom in a globalized music industry.
