“Barbie” is officially the biggest blockbuster of 2023 in the United States. This sassy doll has snatched the crown from “Super Mario Bros.” and claimed the top spot at the domestic box office.
Numbers don’t lie, and according to the folks in the know, “Barbie” has raked in a whopping $575.4 million at the American box office as of last Thursday. That’s just a smidge more than what Mario and his gang managed, with their wallet-filling antics bringing in $574.2 million.
Now, what’s even more jaw-dropping is the speed at which “Barbie” sprinted to the top. It danced its way to this record-breaking achievement in just 34 days after its grand entrance onto the big screen. Mario, on the other hand, took a leisurely 138 days to reach that $574.2 million milestone. Talk about a sprint versus a stroll!
Lights, camera, records broken! “Barbie” rolled out the pink carpet of success right from its July 21 premiere. The opening weekend was a jaw-dropper, pulling in a cool $155 million domestically. That’s not just the biggest opening weekend of the year, but also the most dazzling debut ever for a female director. Kudos to girl power!
But wait, there’s more. In the following weeks, “Barbie” went on a record-smashing spree. It showed some serious muscle by becoming the top earner for Warner Bros. Discovery, leaving the former champion, 2008’s “The Dark Knight,” in the dust.
