In 1972, Spanos earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from the University of the Pacific.

The Chargers Champions program was established in 1999 by the Spanos family through the Community Foundation to assist local schools. The Perry family contributed half a million dollars to UC San Diego’s Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center in 2014, and Dean hosted a Sacramento event to raise money for Rick Perry in 2011.
With this, their total backing reached $1.6 million. In remembrance of his wife, who beat breast cancer, Dean also spearheaded the Chargers’ partnership with the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
To honor San Diego’s high school teachers and students, Dean established the Chargers Champions All-Star Gala. After Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Spanos and the Chargers gave half a million dollars to help with hurricane assistance.

John Dean and Alexander Gus were born to Dean and Suzie in 1977; both sons continued the family business and became team captains. In addition to the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, Dean was presented with the Harold Leventhal Community Service Award.
He and his wife Susie were honored with the Community Champions Award from the San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum, and he was also inducted into the DeMolay International Alumni Hall of Fame.
