In Fontana, California, a middle school student sought his instructor for assistance with a term in a book he was reading for English class when the teacher started pressuring him to speak the word, which is a racial slur.
The eighth-grader at Sequoia Middle School came across the N-word while reading Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” The boy was uncomfortable using that type of language, but the teacher could be seen repeatedly telling him to use the term on a video that was recorded by one of the student’s classmates.
The teacher asserted that the slur is only a word, is listed in the dictionary, and that he should be able to pronounce it.
The student’s classmates claimed that they felt uneasy about the conversation as well.
The instructor, who is from a different country, may not have comprehended that the word might be hurtful, but another of the pupils told Fox 11 that she should have known better than to use it.

After her mother complained to the school administration, the teacher removed the student who had recorded the video from the class.
Others in the class reported that the teacher continues to bring up the conversation. She allegedly defends her behavior.
The Fontana Unified School District stated that it has been informed of the event in a letter to the school’s family and staff.
The District does not condone the language used in the video or using that language outside of the context of discussing the novel, the district writes in the letter.
“We acknowledge that this derogatory language comes from a novel first published in the late 1800s, and that historical context is important to consider when discussing literature.”
The letter says, “Fontana Unified is now looking into this problem.” “Although we are unable to provide further information at this time, please know that the District takes this report, as well as any others, seriously, addresses the issue right away, and takes whatever required action.”
