For two years, he oversaw offensive quality control, and for three years, he coached quarterbacks for the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1999, he spent a year coaching quarterbacks with Green Bay, the position he would ultimately ascend to.
His following six years were split between two teams as offensive coordinator; he was with the New Orleans Saints for five of those years and the San Francisco 49ers for one.
