A guy has entered a not guilty plea to 10 charges after being accused of killing four people in a small village in northeastern Nebraska.
Jason Jones, 43, of Laurel, asked to enter written pleas of not guilty to two counts of first-degree arson and four counts of first-degree murder on Monday rather than exercising his right to make a personal appearance at a May 22 arraignment, according to The Sioux City Journal.
In addition to setting the victims’ homes on fire, Jones is charged with shooting and killing Michele Ebeling, 53; Gene Twiford, 86; his wife, Janet Twiford, 85; and their 55-year-old daughter, Dana Twiford.
If Jones is found guilty, the prosecution plans to ask for the death penalty.
In connection with the death of Gene Twiford, Carrie Jones, the husband of the defendant, is accused of tampering with physical evidence, being an accessory to a felony, and one count of first-degree murder. As soon as the four deaths were discovered on August 4, 2022, she is suspected of aiding her severely burned husband in evading capture as investigators looked for him.

With a $1 million bond, Carrie Jones is still in detention. Her arraignment is slated for May 22.
About 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Omaha, there are less than 1,000 people living in the village of Laurel.
