Vice President Kamala Harris was chastised on Thursday after she burst out laughing when asked if the US would accept Ukrainian refugees. During a joint press appearance with Poland’s President Andrzej Duda in Warsaw, the embarrassing moment occurred. Similar queries were posed to both presidents concerning the US absorbing Ukrainian migrants or relieving pressure on Poland’s already stretched humanitarian resources.
Harris and Duda exchanged glances when the reporter finished asking her questions, as though each of them expected the other to answer first. “OK,” Harris finally responded, eliciting a laugh from Duda and the surrounding journalists. “We are looking for international support because indeed the vast majority of Ukrainian refugees are coming to our country,” the Polish leader said. “We will not send them back to what is a war zone,” Harris said. On Twitter, critics slammed the vice president, saying the issue of refugees was “no funny matter.”

“Only Kamala Harris would find it appropriate to laugh when talking about the topic of Ukrainian Refugees,” tweeted Benny Johnson. “Kamala Harris has been very consistent during her live remarks with Poland’s leader,” said former Donald Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos. “She is awkwardly laughing. Again. Discussing refugees is no laughing matter. Why she laughs at this is deranged.” “Nothing about any of this is funny,” added Fox News.
Harris isn’t the first person to be chastised for laughing at an inopportune time. In August, Harris interrupted a reporter’s query regarding the disastrous US departure from Afghanistan by shouting, “Hold on, hold on – slow down, folks,” before laughing. Meghan McCain, a former co-host of “The View,” said at the time that Harris had “some type of serious issue” and compared her to “Batman” villain The Joker.
