American football quarterback Baker Reagan Mayfield plays for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was born on April 14, 1995. Mayfield became the first walk-on in Heisman Trophy history as a senior for the Oklahoma Sooners football team after playing for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Cleveland Browns took him with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Baker Mayfield Net Worth
Paychecks of $6 million have been reported for American football player Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield was selected by the Cleveland Browns as the first overall choice in the 2018 NFL Draft, following his Heisman Trophy victory as the quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners.
Baker was given a signing bonus of $21.8 million by the Browns in 2018. With that incentive added on, Baker’s total earnings in his first six seasons with the NFL were little under $50 million. As we will discuss in the part that follows, Baker was embroiled in a major financial scandal in 2023.
Alleged Investment Loss
Disclosure came on August 19, 2023, when it was announced that Baker wad had petitioned a court in Austin, Texas, seeking investment business financial information spanning 2018–2023. Six different corporations’ investment managers were also asked to appear in depositions as part of the petition.
Unfortunately, Baker’s dad, James Mayfield, was the founder of two of those businesses. Baker wanted to know what became of the $12 million he put into the companies in his petition. Baker is unsure “if their money has been properly and competently invested, has been stolen or otherwise misappropriated, or something in between,” according to the petition.
From 2018 through 2023, the relevant years, Baker earned slightly over $50 million. The amount would have dropped to $20 million after taxes and fees. Therefore, sixty percent of his net income, or twelve million dollars, would have been lost or stolen in an improper manner.
Baker Mayfield Early Life
Gina and James Mayfield welcomed their second son, Baker Reagan, into the world in Austin, Texas, on April 14, 1995. During his two years as quarterback, Baker guided the Lake Travis High School Cavaliers to a 25-2 record and the 4A state championship in 2011.
He was a three-star recruit and had a stellar high school football career, throwing for 6,255 yards, 67 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Even though he was offered scholarships, he decided to walk-on at Texas Tech University.
Baker Mayfield Controversy
Charges of public intoxication, disorderly behavior, escaping and evading arrest, and disorderly conduct led to Mayfield’s arrest in Washington County, Arkansas, on February 25, 2017.
Someone reported an assault and battery early that Saturday morning, and an officer responded. Baker was said to have slurred speech and be unable to walk straight in the police report. Angry and disruptive, Mayfield refused to stay to provide a statement.
He attempted to flee, but an officer tackled him and subsequently booked him on minor counts. He was ordered to undergo an alcohol education program and perform 35 hours of community service after entering a not guilty plea to all charges.
Uber Driving
There was a time when Baker Mayfield wasn’t a star quarterback. He wasn’t assured a starting position with the Sooners after moving from Texas Tech to Oklahoma. As he continued to build his reputation on the field, Mayfield worked as an Uber driver for a while.
Mayfield offered rides to his fellow Oklahomans as he drove about Norman in 2015 and 2016. Two rides per hour is the typical rate for an Uber driver. Mayfield earned $590 a week if he drove 30 hours per week (which is an optimistic estimate, to say the least).
