The Philippines’ San Pablo is his mother’s hometown. The late Watson Spoelstra was a well-known sportswriter for “The Detroit News.” Erik’s grandpa was no different. While Erik was a kid, his family uprooted from Buffalo, New York, and settled in Portland, Oregon.
