Colleen Burton, R-Lakeland, is posed just behind DeSantis’ left elbow. Both of them, along with the bulk of the other politicians in the picture, the vast majority of whom are women, wear jubilant grins.

Canady, who is serving in her first term as a legislator, is one of the two major sponsors of House Bill 7, along with Rep. Jenna Persons-Mulicka, R-Fort Myers, who presented the bill on the first day of the legislative session. Canady was elected to serve in this capacity earlier this year.
