Trump Sues Former Attorney Michael Cohen Following Grand Jury Testimony

Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against his former attorney Michael Cohen on Wednesday, seeking at least $500 million in damages, as the former U.S. president escalated his assaults on his former “fixer” following Cohen’s testimony before the Manhattan grand jury that indicted Trump.

In a complaint filed in federal court in Miami, Trump accused Cohen of failing to maintain the confidentiality of attorney-client communications and profiting from “spreading falsehoods” about him.

Cohen’s attorney, Lanny Davis, described Trump’s lawsuit as “frivolous.” Trump has frequently filed lawsuits against various adversaries over the years.

Davis stated that Mr. Trump is once again using and exploiting the judicial system to harass and intimidate Michael Cohen.

Cohen, who once said he would “do anything” to protect Trump, appears positioned to become a star witness against him in a possible New York criminal trial on charges unsealed last week.

Trump, who is seeking the Republican nomination for president in 2024, pled not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records. It was the first time an ex-president of the United States was charged with a felony.

Democrat Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has asserted that Trump concealed his reimbursement of Cohen for $130,000 in hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels, who claims she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006, prior to the 2016 presidential election. Trump denies the existence of such a relationship.

According to Trump’s lawsuit, Cohen falsely labeled him a “racist” in the disbarred attorney’s 2020 book, “Disloyal,” and fabricated conversations with Trump from his time as his attorney.

“The timing of Disloyal’s release, just before the November 3, 2020 Presidential Election, suggests that (Cohen) intended to improperly disclose (Trump’s) confidences when it would be most profitable to do so – and when Disloyal would have the most damaging reputational effect,” the lawsuit said.

Trump lost the election to Joe Biden, a Democrat.
