According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, Texas’ population topped 30 million last year. The organization released its population projections for July 1, 2022, on Thursday.
New data, however, indicate that the development is not being felt uniformly throughout the state.
Texas has 254 counties, of which 158 have had population growth since July 1, 2021, while 95 have seen population reduction. San Saba, one county, remained unchanged.
With a population increase of just under 9%, Kaufman County, which is southeast of Dallas, expanded more quickly than any other county in the state. The county’s growth rate was the second-fastest in the nation, after only Whitman County, Washington, which increased by 10.1%.

Each county in Rockwall, Parker, Comal, and Chambers grew by more than 5% to rank among the top 10 fastest-growing in the nation. Moreover, Hays County experienced growth of almost 5%, significantly outpacing the state’s growth average of 1.59%.
West of Midland/Odessa, Loving County experienced the biggest percentage drop in population, with a drop of 10.5% from 57 to 51 total persons. The county continues to have the lowest population in the nation.

Both King and Borden counties, which are close to Lubbock, saw a decline in population of more than 5%.
In terms of absolute numbers, 12 counties saw population growth of over 10,000 between July 1, 2021, and July 1, 2022. With more than 45,000 additional residents, Harris County, which is home to the state’s largest city, Houston, takes the lead. North of Dallas, in Collin County, there were more than 44,000 additional residents.
The Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio metro areas each have one of the ten counties with the highest population growth rates.
In the meantime, more than 1,000 people moved out of two counties. Beaumont’s county, Jefferson, saw a 2,701 decline in population, while Corpus Christi’s county, Nueces, saw a loss of more than 1,500 people.
